WEB-080A: Individuals who work with animals in a research environment encounter different hazards every day. Knowing how to identify hazards and implement successful strategies to minimize their effects is essential for maintaining the safety of research personnel, animal facility staff, and the animals involved. A risk assessment is a standardized process for collecting and analyzing this information to be able to estimate and prioritize measures to minimize their impact to an acceptable level. The best outcomes typically occur when a multidisciplinary team of subject matter experts participates in this effort, especially those who have first-hand knowledge and experience working with research animals.

This webinar provides an overview of the basic risk assessment process as it applies to research involving live animals. Practical techniques for (1) collecting information needed to assess various types of research hazards; (2) analyzing unique risks attributed to working with these hazards in animal models; (3) applying appropriate mitigation strategies; and (4) customizing risk assessment results to address the unique needs of different programs will be discussed. Real life examples to show how basic risk assessment principles can be applied to protect the health and welfare of personnel and animals in a typical laboratory animal facility will be highlighted.
