Do you want to be part of an exciting and creatively challenging contest that is sure to be loads of fun and will also benefit the AALAS Foundation?

Salt Lake City, Utah is known for being part of the old “Wild West!” That’s why the AALAS Foundation is challenging contestants to paint/decorate a wooden 11” cowboy boot – an official wooden cowboy boot will be shipped to contestants upon registration and payment of entry fee.

How to Enter
A $35 contest entry fee and a 2023 “Boot Up for Research” Contest entry form must be completed and received by the AALAS Foundation no later than August 31, 2023. Entry fees and registration may be made online via the official online registration link here, or by check, money order, or credit card.

Each wooden cowboy boot entered into the contest will be assigned a unique registration number by the AALAS Foundation. All entries must be assigned into one of the following contest categories: Individual Category, Corporate Category, Branch Category or Institution / Organization Category. Note: AALAS Foundation reserves the right to make final category selections for all entries.

All who register for the contest and pay the $35 contest registration fee will be provided a unique contest registration number and mailed the official 11” wooden cowboy boot for painting/decorating, along with specific guidelines for the contest.

Contest Guidelines
  • Each contestant is required to submit the officially approved AALAS Foundation wooden cowboy boot for entry into the contest. The official wooden cowboy boot will be sent by AALAS Foundation to all registered contestants.
  • Any artistic medium may be used on an entry – paint, glue, pencil, ink, paper, staples, textiles, etc.
  • Entries may not include animal body parts or tissue or replicas thereof.
  • Each entry must include the AALAS Foundation “Boot Up for Research” contest registration number assigned to it. That number shall be displayed on the back of the entry. (Registration numbers are assigned by AALAS Foundation)
  • An entry must not exceed more than 11.5” in height;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 9” in width;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 1/2” in depth – in area that sits inside the official display stand;
  • All entries MUST be able to fit and display, with no assistance, in the official contest display stand.
  • All entries must not weigh more than one pound;
  • All contest entries must be received by the AALAS Foundation at the 2023 AALAS Foundation “Boot Up for Research” Booth in Salt Lake City, Utah, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. MST on Sunday, October 22nd and 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. MST on Monday, October 23rd, 2023.
  • All entries are subject to review for approval and acceptance into the contest by the Contest Review Committee whose decisions are final. Any entry deemed to contain inappropriate and/or offensive material or content by the Contest Review Committee will be ineligible for entry into the contest and contestant’s $35 registration fee will be refunded.
  • Contestants must provide a digital photo of their entry to the AALAS Foundation by October 9th, 2023, to be eligible for inclusion in the Facebook photo gallery. Email photos to foundation@aalas.org.
Prior to the start of the 2023 National Meeting, the public will have an opportunity to go online to judge the entries and “vote” for their favorite entry. A “vote” is a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation. Each “vote” requires a minimum $5.00 donation. Online contest “voting” begins Wednesday, September 20, 2023, and ends Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. MST.

All branches, companies, institutions, and individuals are encouraged to participate. The main goal of this lively event is to help raise funds to support the AALAS Foundation in its mission to educate the public about the importance of biomedical research and the compassionate professionals working in the field of laboratory animal science.

How to Win
  • There are four contest categories: Individual, Corporate/Company, Branch, and Institution/Association. The entry receiving the most “votes”/donations collected on its behalf, within each category, will be determined the category winner.
  • There will be four category winners – one from each category.
  • A “Fans’ Favorite” winner will be awarded to the entry receiving the most Facebook “likes” on the AALAS Foundation’s “Boot Up for Research” Facebook photo gallery by 11:00 am MST, October 25, 2023. Contestants must submit a digital photo of their entry to the AALAS Foundation by October 9th, 2023 to be eligible for inclusion in the “Fan Favorite” category of the contest. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 25, 2023, at AALAS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • A “Best of Show” winner will be selected by members of AALAS Leadership. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 25, 2023 at AALAS National Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Winner Selection

AALAS members, their family and friends may “vote” on behalf of the entry of their choosing. The awarding of “votes” is actually a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation. A winner from each of the four (4) categories will be selected. The entry that receives the most “votes”/donations on its behalf by the end of the contest, Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 11:00 am MST, will be deemed the first place winner of its category.

All entrants into the contest may opt to donate their entry into the AALAS Foundation’s silent auction.

Entries donated to the AALAS Foundation Silent Auction will be acknowledged as a $5 donation to the AALAS Foundation
