2020 Charlotte, North Carolina - AALAS Foundation “Biplane Battle” Contest

Gather up your paint brushes! The AALAS Foundation Biplane Battle contest is on!

Do you want to be part of an exciting and creatively challenging contest that’s sure to be loads of fun and will also benefit the AALAS Foundation?

North Carolina is known for the Wright Brothers whose “Flying Machine” was the first powered airplane to execute controlled and sustained flight.  That’s why, this year, the AALAS Foundation has designed a “Biplane Battle” contest and we are challenging contestants to paint/decorate a wooden 8” x 7.5” airplane – link to purchase official plane will be provided to contestants upon registration and payment of entry fee.

To Enter the Contest

A $25 contest entry fee and a 2020 “Biplane Battle” Contest entry form must be completed and received by the AALAS Foundation no later than September 8, 2020. Entry fees and registration may be made online via the official online registration form, or, by check, money order, or credit card.

Each airplane entered into the contest will be assigned a unique registration number by the AALAS Foundation.  All entries must be assigned into one of the following contest categories: Individual Category, Corporate Category, Branch Category or Institution / Organization Category.  Note: AALAS Foundation reserves the right to make final category selections for all entries.

All who register for the contest and pay the $25 contest registration fee will be provided a unique contest registration number and emailed a link to purchase the official 8” x 7.5” official 10” x 3 ½ “ wooden airplane for painting/decorating, along with specific guidelines for the contest.  The cost to purchase the wooden airplane is approximately $3.00, plus shipping (approx. $7.50), and tax, which varies based on location.

Contest Guidelines

  • Each contestant is required to submit the officially approved AALAS Foundation wooden airplane for entry into the contest.  
  • Any artistic medium may be used on an entry – paint, glue, pencil, ink, paper, staples, textiles, etc.;
  • Entries may not include animal body parts or tissue or replicas thereof.
  • Each entry must include the “AALAS Foundation Biplane Battle” contest registration number assigned to it.  That number shall be displayed on the bottom of the airplane. (Registration numbers are assigned by the AALAS Foundation)
  • An entry must not exceed more than 11” in height;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 10” in width;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 8” in depth;
  • All entries must not weight more than one pound;
  • All contest entries must be received by the AALAS Foundation at the 2020 “AALAS Foundation Biplane Battle” Booth in Charlotte North Carolina, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 25th, and 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26th, 2020.
  • All entries are subject to review for approval and acceptance into the contest by the Contest Review Committee whose decisions are final. Any entry deemed to contain inappropriate and/or offensive material or content by the Contest Review Committee will be ineligible for entry into the contest and contestant’s $25 registration fee will be refunded.
  • Contestants must provide a digital photo of their entry to the AALAS Foundation by October 15, 2020, to be eligible for inclusion in the Facebook photo gallery. Email photos to foundation@aalas.org.
  • All registered entries will be on display at the AALAS Foundation Biplane Battle” contest booth at the 2020 National Meeting in Charlotte, NC.
Prior to the start of the 2020 National Meeting, the public will have an opportunity to go online to judge the entries and “vote” for their favorite entry.  A “vote” is a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation.  Each “vote” requires a minimum $5.00 donation. Online contest “voting” begins Monday, September 21, 2020 and ends Wednesday, October 28, at 11:00 am EST.

Beginning Sunday, October 25, 2020, attendees of the 2020 National Meeting will be able to “vote” ($5.00 minimum “vote”/donation) on behalf of their favorite entry at the AALAS Foundation Biplane Battle” contest booth at the 2020 National Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. All contest “voting”/donating ends Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at 11:00 am EST.

All branches, companies, institutions, and individuals are encouraged to participate. The main goal of this lively event is to help raise funds to support the AALAS Foundation in its mission to educate the public about the importance of biomedical research and the compassionate professionals working in the field of laboratory animal science.

How to Win
  • There are four contest categories: Individual, Corporate/Company, Branch, and Institution/Association. The entry receiving the most “votes”/donations collected on its behalf, within each category, will be determined the category winner.
  • There will be four category winners – one from each category.
  • Winners of each category will be automatically entered into the live auction on Wednesday night, October 28, 2020.
  • A “Fans’ Favorite” winner will be awarded to the entry receiving the most Facebook “likes” on the AALAS Foundation’s “Biplane Battle” Facebook photo gallery by 11:00 am EST, October 28 2020. Contestants must submit a digital photo of their entry to the AALAS Foundation by October 15, 2020 to be eligible for inclusion in the “Fan Favorite” category of the contest. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 28, 2020 at AALAS National Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • A “Best of Show” winner will be selected by members of AALAS Leadership. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 28, 2020 at AALAS National Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Winner Selection
AALAS members, their family and friends may “vote” on behalf of the entry of their choosing. The awarding of “votes” is actually a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation. A winner from each of the four (4) categories will be selected. The entry that receives the most “votes”/donations on its behalf by the end of the contest, Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 11:00 am EST, will be deemed the first place winner of its category.

The first place winner of each category (Individual, Corporate, Branch, Institution /Organization) will be automatically entered into the live auction on Wednesday night, October 28, 2020.

Optional Entry into AALAS Foundation Silent Auction

All entrants into the contest may opt to donate their entry into the AALAS Foundation’s silent auction. (Note: By registering into this contest, entrants agree that should their entry be one of the first place category winning entries that their entry is deemed an automatic donation to the AALAS Foundation’s Live Auction.)

Entries donated to the AALAS Foundation Silent Auction will be acknowledged as a $5 donation to the AALAS Foundation

“Biplane Battle” Entry Pick Up

All entries not donated or automatically placed in the AALAS Foundation’s Silent & Live Auction must be picked up by its owner no later than 2:00 pm EST on Wednesday, October 28, 2020. The AALAS Foundation will not be responsible for entries not picked up after this date and time.
