2018 Baltimore, MD - AALAS Foundation Cup - Set Sail With Lab Animal Science Contest

Hoist up your sails and gather up your paint brushes – the AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science contest is on!

Do you want to be part of an exciting and creatively challenging contest that’s sure to be loads of fun and will also benefit the AALAS Foundation?

Baltimore, Maryland is known for its Inner Harbor and ships.  That’s why this year the AALAS Foundation has designed a “Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” contest and we are challenging contestants to paint/decorate a wooden 8 1/2” boat – a link to order the special wooden boat will be sent to contestants via email upon registration and payment of entry fee.

To Enter the Contest: A $20 contest entry fee and a 2018 “AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” Contest entry form must be completed and received by the AALAS Foundation no later than September 7, 2018. Entry fees and registration may be made online via the official online registration form, or, by check, money order, or credit card.

Each decorated boat entered into the contest will be assigned a unique registration number by the AALAS Foundation.  All entries must be assigned into one of the following contest categories: Individual Category, Corporate Category, Branch Category or Institution / Organization Category.  Note:AALAS Foundation reserves the right to make final category selections for all entries.

All who register for the contest and pay the $20 contest registration fee will be provided a unique contest registration number, a link to order the official “Set Sail With Lab Animal Science” wooden 8 1/2” boat for painting/decorating, along with specific guidelines for the contest.

Contest Guidelines

  • Each contestant is required to submit the officially approved AALAS Foundation wooden sailboat for entry into the contest.

  • Any artistic medium may be used on an entry – paint, glue, pencil, ink, paper, staples, textiles, etc.;
  • Entries may not include animal body parts or tissue or replicas thereof.
  • Each entry must include the “AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” contest registration number assigned to it. That number shall be displayed on the bottom of the boat. (Registration numbers are assigned by AALAS Foundation)
  • An entry must not exceed more than 11” in height;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 11” in width;
  • An entry must not exceed more than 4” in depth;
  • All contest entries must be received by the AALAS Foundation at the 2018 “AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” Booth in Baltimore, Maryland, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 28th and 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 29th, 2018.
  • All entries are subject to review for approval and acceptance into the contest by the Contest Review Committee whose decisions are final. Any entry deemed to contain inappropriate and/or offensive material or content by the Contest Review Committee will be ineligible for entry into the contest and contestant’s $20 registration fee will be refunded.

Digital photos of the final boat entries should be submitted to the AALAS Foundation in advance of the 2018 AALAS National Meeting for posting on the AALAS Foundation’s Facebook page. All registered entries will be on display at the AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” contest booth at the 2018 National Meeting in Baltimore, MD.

Prior to the start of the 2018 National Meeting, the public will have an opportunity to go online to judge the boat entries and “vote” for their favorite entry.  A “vote” is a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation.  Each “vote” requires a minimum $5.00 donation. Online contest “voting” begins Monday, October 1, 2018 and ends Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at 11:00 am EST.

Beginning Sunday, October 28, 2018, attendees of the 2018 National Meeting will be able to “vote” ($5.00 minimum “vote”/donation) on behalf of their favorite boat entry at the AALAS Foundation Cup – Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” contest booth at the 2018 National Meeting in Baltimore, MD. All contest “voting”/donating ends Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. EST.

All branches, companies, institutions, and individuals are encouraged to participate. The main goal of this lively event is to help raise funds to support the AALAS Foundation in its mission to educate the public about the importance of biomedical research and the compassionate professionals working in the field of laboratory animal science.

How to Win

  • There are four contest categories: Individual, Corporate/Company, Branch, and Institution/Association. The entry receiving the most “votes”/donations collected on its behalf, within each category, will be determined the category winner.
  • There will be four category winners – one from each category.
  • Winners of each category will be automatically entered into the live auction on Wednesday night, October 31, 2018.
  • A “Fans’ Favorite” winner will be awarded to the entry receiving the most Facebook “likes” on the AALAS Foundation’s “Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” Facebook photo gallery by 11:00 am EST, October 31, 2018. Contestants must submit a digital photo of their entry to the AALAS Foundation by October 19, 2018 to be eligible for inclusion in the “Fan Favorite” category of the contest. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 31, 2018 at AALAS National Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland..
  • A “Best of Show” winner will be selected by members of AALAS Leadership. Winner will be announced at Appreciation Reception to be held October 31, 2018 at AALAS National Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.

Winner Selection

AALAS members, their family and friends may “vote” on behalf of the boat entry of their choosing. The awarding of “votes” is actually a financial donation to the AALAS Foundation. A winner from each of the four (4) categories will be selected. The entry that receives the most “votes”/donations on its behalf by the end of the contest, Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 11:00 am EST, will be deemed the first place winner of its category.

The first place winner of each category (Individual, Corporate, Branch, Institution /Organization) will be automatically entered into the live auction on Wednesday night, October 31, 2018.

Optional Entry into AALAS Foundation Silent Auction

All entrants into the contest may opt to donate their entry into the AALAS Foundation’s silent auction. (Note: By registering into this contest, entrants agree that should their entry be one of the first place category winning entries that their piece is deemed an automatic donation to the AALAS Foundation’s Live Auction.)

Entries donated to the AALAS Foundation Silent Auction will be acknowledged as a $38 donation to the AALAS Foundation

“Set Sail with Lab Animal Science” Entry Pick Up

All entries not donated or automatically placed in the AALAS Foundation’s Silent & Live Auction must be picked up by its owner no later than 2:00 pm EST on Wednesday, October 31, 2018. The AALAS Foundation will not be responsible for entries not picked up after this date and time.
