Summer Webinars Announced

5/31/2017

Make plans to attend the July and August webinars.

The July webinar, Creating Mouse Models through Transgenic Technologies, will be held Tuesday, July 11 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM CT. This webinar will be presented by Aimee Stablewski, MA.

Do you work with transgenic mice? No doubt you have heard about the transgenic technologies used to generate these mice, but would you like to know more about how these technologies work? In this webinar, we will demystify how transgenic, knockout, and knockin mice are generated by various technologies. We will explain embryonic stem cell injections, tissue and temporal control of gene expression, genome editing nucleases, including CRISPR. Because CRISPR has revolutionized the transgenic field, we will focus mainly on why CRISPR applications have been so successful for the fast and efficient editing of the mouse genome.

The August webinar, Animal Protocols: Strategy for an Effective IACUC Review, will be held Thursday, August 10 from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM CT. This webinar will be presented by Cynthia Pekow, DVM, CPIA.

IACUC deliberation is key to humane, safe, and well-reasoned use of animals in research and teaching. When reviewing a protocol, the IACUC balances costs and benefits to arrive at a decision on approval. Costs include animal lives, pain or distress, and resources. Benefits include knowledge to advance science and medicine. In this webinar, we will walk through the protocol review process with the strategy of posing questions to understand how animals will be studied from start to finish, including details that directly affect animal welfare. These questions bring out what is required in a protocol with a focus on aspects that bear on humane and regulatory considerations, and prepare IACUC members to effectively discuss the protocol.
