Right Numbers for Animal Protocols

2/22/2019

The Right Numbers for Animal Protocols webinar will be held on Wednesday, April 24 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM CT.

The Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the United States Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals state that the number of animals used in experiments needs to be appropriate, justified and/or a minimum to obtain valid results. Many journals require a statistical power-based assessment of the sample size in a manuscript submitted for publication. The number of animals may be estimated based on previous experience, or a power analysis and sample size calculation may need to be performed. This presentation will give a review of the types of outcome variables and hypotheses testing. Factors that must be known or estimated to determine sample sizes will be covered along with examples of sample size calculations.

The presenter is Robyn Lee-Stubbs, MS, CPIA, Pstat. Robyn Lee-Stubbs received a BA in mathematics from Rutgers University and a MS in biometrics from Temple University. Robyn has been a senior biostatistician at DAKKRO Corp., DuPont Pharmaceuticals, Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories, and ER Squibb. She is a Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) and an Accredited Professional Statistician (PStat). Robyn has dual roles of statistician and IACUC Chair at the US Army research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD). As the Institute statistician, Robyn provides guidance on experimental design, statistical methods for analyzing research data, dose selection in stagewise adaptive dose design studies, review manuscripts prior to publication and in-house tech reports, and provides statistical training for Institute researchers. She reviews all animal research protocols and signs off on them with respect to appropriate animal numbers and experimental design. As the IACUC Chair, Robyn conducts provides regulatory information and guidance on animal care and use to the research staff and helps the Institute maintain compliance with federal, Department of Defense and Army animal care and use regulations.
