Have you and your colleagues ever had the experience of setting up breeding mice, waiting 40 days, but finding no pups? Many researchers encounter problems with getting mice to breed, particularly when it is their first project. Questions often arise whether the mice are capable of breeding, if there is a phenotype that is interfering with breeding, or whether routine animal husbandry is affecting mating ability of the mice. Often, investigators just want to know if "they're doing it right". This webinar will examine some of the routine and not-so-routine problems that are encountered. Some ideas for mitigating problems will be presented. By the end of the webinar, participants should have a better understanding of how the mouse will react to its environment, the personnel handling it, and the specific handling techniques. Both investigators and animal handlers will learn to identify specific problems with breeding prior to these problems becoming insurmountable. In addition, we will examine some differences between phenotype and environmental stresses. This webinar recording offers information on how to:

  • Recognize common effects of environment and phenotype on breeding success.
  • Troubleshoot common problems in male and female mice when reproduction fails.<
  • Apply strategies to determine and resolve breeding issues in mice.
  • Address ethical issues in developing mouse lines with abnormal phenotypes.
