Regulatory guidance for laboratory animal use calls for "the avoidance or minimization of discomfort, distress, and pain when consistent with sound scientific practices." As enacted in the Animal Welfare Act regulations, IACUCs may approve protocols in which pain-relieving medicines may be withheld for the sake of sound scientific practice; animals in such situations are reported annually to the USDA in "Column E," and many institutions use the USDA's C-D-E system for their other species as well. This webinar will review the USDA's guidance for reviewing, approving, and reporting "Category E" studies. We will evaluate how untreated pain and distress might also affect data. We will discuss how IACUCs can evaluate the ethical justification for approving a Category E study, especially when it is not certain how pain and pain medications may affect research outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Know the differences among the USDA's C, D, and E "pain categories".
  • Understand how scientists' transparency in reporting details of their animal use influence the quality of literature searches for alternatives.
  • Relate the strengths and limitations of the USDA categories to decisions on whether to use these categories for non-USDA-regulated species.

Audience: Veterinarians, researchers, IACUC members, and compliance staff.

AALAS CEUs: You can apply for up to 1.5 CEUs for the Technician Certification Registry or CMAR recertification. Please use the forms on the AALAS website or online CEU submission.
