WEB-024A: The presentation will give an overview of the current recommendations for euthanasia of the laboratory rat. We will begin with an overview of the commonly used methods of euthanasia and their mechanisms of action, with an emphasis on methods of anesthetic overdose. Next, we will explore current literature and ongoing research specific to the laboratory rat. We will also discuss available tools for the assessment of animal well-being during the euthanasia process and future directions of research.

  •  Explain mechanisms of action of commonly used methods of anesthetic overdose for euthanasia.
  • Apply tools for the assessment of animal well-being during the acute process of euthanasia.
