Proper Perioperative Procedures: Do They Really Matter?
Date:
February 27, 2020
Time:
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CT

WEB:059: Adequate perioperative care for research animals is the responsibility of the research community as a whole, not just the veterinary staff. In a perfect setting, a well-planned study of an immunocompetent animal undergoing surgery by an experienced surgeon and having appropriate surgical and analgesic support results in both an animal that recovers well and research that generates valuable data. To reduce research risks, it is important to know the impact of proper vs. inadequate care on the animal and the research study. In this webinar, we will touch on the federal requirements for these standards, what it means to have adequate veterinary care particularly with regards to perioperative procedures, and how and why animal welfare and research can be affected when care falls short of ideal standards.
