Right Numbers for Animal Protocols
April 24, 2019
12:00 PM - 1:30 PM CT

WEB-049: The Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the United States Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals state that the number of animals used in experiments needs to be appropriate, justified and/or a minimum to obtain valid results. Many journals require a statistical power-based assessment of the sample size in a manuscript submitted for publication. The number of animals may be estimated based on previous experience, or a power analysis and sample size calculation may need to be performed. This presentation will give a review of the types of outcome variables and hypotheses testing. Factors that must be known or estimated to determine sample sizes will be covered along with examples of sample size calculations.
