Resistance is Not Futile! Judicious Antimicrobial Use in Laboratory Animal Medicine
Date:
December 12, 2019
Time:
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

WEB-057: Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern in both human and veterinary medicine, however this issue is rarely discussed in the context of laboratory animal medicine. This presentation will review the origins and general mechanisms of how bacteria become resistant to antimicrobial agents, how we use antimicrobial agents in laboratory animals (both or experimental and therapeutic purposes), unique challenges related to antimicrobial use in experimental models, and strategies for appropriate antimicrobial stewardship within the context of laboratory animal medicine. This webinar will primarily focus on antimicrobial use in rodent and non-human primate models and is targeted for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, investigative staff and IACUC members involved in veterinary care and animal protocol review.
