WEB-034a: Light and lighting protocols in animal facilities are a concern to both biomedical scientists and animal care personnel alike. Light exposure of sufficient intensity, wavelength, and duration at a given time of day significantly influences temporal coordination of circadian rhythms of neuroendocrine, metabolic, and physiologic parameters associated with the promotion of animal health and wellbeing and thus may influence scientific outcomes. Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is a rapidly emerging technology currently being embraced by the laboratory animal science community and international lighting industry. LED lighting has many advantages over broad-spectrum cool white fluorescent (CWF) and incandescent lighting to include higher efficiency, lower heat production, superior spectral control, and lower long-term costs. While institutions worldwide are embracing this new technology, little to no information is known regarding the long-term use of LED lighting on animal behavior, physiology and metabolism. The objective of the webinar is to examine these current and new vivarium lighting technologies. Lighting and lighting protocols, as recommended in The Guide, will be addressed, along with the emerging new scientific findings pertaining to LED light and its influence on laboratory animal health and wellbeing.
